Made up of three positions, two props on either side of a hooker, the front row’s biggest job is at the set-piece. The tight head prop, traditionally the stronger scrummager, and the loose head prop, is expected to play a bit more of an open game. However in modern rugby with the evolution of more athletic big men, ball carrying props that can devastate defensive lines have become a lot more popular. The hooker is often seen as a skill position player lumped in with the front row. Requiring deft hands to throw accurately in the lineout, whilst also needing to be able to scrummage and compete for the ball in the pack, they are often some of the most versatile players on a rugby pitch.
