Second Rows, or locks, are primarily expected to be jumper in the lineout and the engine room of the scrum. Long, rangy, strong and quick, they are often the most formidable athletes on the pitch. In recent years second rows are often utilised as extra back row players in the modern game, requiring strong tackling and carrying as well as their work in the set piece, providing a disruptive force at a breakdown and a mismatch for opposition coaches.
